A B S T R A C T The RENUVA SYSTEM Increases Growth Hormone and Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 in Man. Frank L. Greenway1, Donald Schumacher2, Jennifer C. Rood1, Ronald J. Amen3. 1Pennington Biomedical Research Center – LSU System, Baton Rouge, LA 70808, 2Center for Nutrition and Preventive Medicine, Charlotte, NC 28207, 3Tech Enterprises, Villa Park, CA 92861 Growth hormone declines with age. Growth hormone deficiency decreases energy, cognitive powers and gives other age related symptoms. These symptoms are reversed with growth hormone replacement. Growth hormone is stimulated by amino acids, nicotinic acid and growth hormone releasing peptides. The RENUVA SYSTEM® contains 480 mg of amino acids, 38 mg of nicotinic acid and 1,500 mg of growth hormone releasing peptides 2 and 6. The proprietary system delivers, by mouth, 90% of peptides into the blood stream including large proteins like growth hormone. Since growth hormone is released in pulses, measurements have great variability. Growth hormone acts through insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) which varies less and is used clinically to gauge growth hormone effects. This study examines the rise in growth hormone and IGF-1 in response to the RENUVA SYSTEM®. Thirteen healthy subjects over 40 years of age on no regular medications other than contraception or hormone replacement therapy were given the RENUVA SYSTEM® after an overnight fast. Blood was drawn and analyzed for growth hormone and IGF-1 at-10, -5, 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 minutes. There was a 98 + 50% (SEM) average rise in growth hormone from baseline to peak value (p<0.05). IGF-1 rose from 198 + 15.3 ng/ml at baseline to 241 + 17.4 ng/ml at 120 minutes (p<0.02). Although 2 subjects had mild transient flushing, there were no other adverse events, and the RENUVA SYSTEM® was well-tolerated. The RENUVA SYSTEM® produces a statistically significant rise in growth hormone and IGF.
